The European five-level scale of the risk of triggering avalanches
The European five-level avalanche danger scale was introduced in 1993. Since then, it has also been used in Slovenia. The overall scale determines the level of danger based on the stability of the snowpack and the likelihood that an avalanche will be triggered. The scale contains information about the characteristics of avalanches that are triggered at a certain stage, as well as the recommendations and effects of these avalanches. The purpose of the scale is a unified presentation of complex processes in nature. The scale consists of five classes, which (although expressed as numbers 1-5) cannot be easily processed mathematically. For example, a threat level of 3-significant is not just one level higher than a threat level of 2-moderate; the danger increases disproportionately (ie not linearly).

Avalanche hazard maps
As part of the NH-WF/Natural Disasters without Borders project, one of the many direct effects of the project was dedicated to the cause: maps of avalanche danger (as well as landslides and rockfalls) for the Zelenica area.
Maps are also available for viewing in the classroom of the Mountaineering Learning Center (GUC) of the mountain lodge in Zelenica.
Current danger of avalanches for Zelenica information-warning sign on Ljubelj
On January 15, 2013, the signal warning board on Ljubelje began to operate, showing the current avalanche danger level for the Zelenica area.
The main purpose of the sign is a clear, vivid display and warning of visitors about the current level of danger of triggering avalanches for the Zelenica area, namely at the starting point for Zelenica - at the parking lot in Ljubelje.
The basic idea of setting up an information/warning board came about when thinking about the possibilities of providing more information, raising awareness among visitors and, as a result, safety against avalanches in the area of Zelenica. In December of last year, agreements on the content, production of electronic components and installation of the board took place, and since last week, the board has already been working on a test basis.
The board shows the current avalanche danger level for the Zelenica area in accordance with the international five-level danger scale. In addition to warnings about snow conditions, informative information, addresses and telephone numbers of the Zelenica mountain lodge and the Zelenica Mountaineering Learning Center have been added.
The avalanche danger level displayed is regulated remotely via an Internet connection and is in accordance with the published forecasts for this area, namely:
- published avalanche risk levels in snow conditions forecasts prepared by the Environment Agency of the Republic of Slovenia ARSO
- published avalanche danger levels in the regional report prepared for the Karavank area by the Austrian-Carinthian Avalanche Warning Service (Lawinenwarndienst Kärnten)
- additional information on the current state of the snow cover on the ground received from visitors to Zelenica (send pictures and your observations and information to guc.zelenica@gmail.com ), caretakers of the home at Zelenica
- periodic expert inspections of field conditions and conducted tests of the strength of the snow cover in the area of Zelenica - ZVSP
The published rate setting will follow those published in the sources mentioned above and will be updated on a daily basis.
The installation of the sign was provided by the Tržič Mountain Association and the Municipality of Tržič.
112 Emergency call device - Zelenica Hut
On February 15, 2013, the installation of an external emergency call device - to the number 112 - was carried out at the mountain lodge on Zelenica.
The main reason for installing the device is the very poor mobile phone signal, the high number of visitors even during the week (when the cabin is closed) and the relatively high frequency of accidents in this area. In winter, avalanches are an additional danger in the area of Zelenica, in which the possibility of immediate notification of an accident and the rapid activation of rescue teams is all the more important.
The emergency call device is installed on the facade of the home on Zelenica. You open the marked box with the attached key, press the button and a call to 112 - the information center in Kranj - is made. The device always works - even when the cottage is closed, it works via a fixed telephone network, after pressing the button a call is established, the telephone number and location are displayed in the center, and the caller can easily tell the operator what kind of help he needs.

Avalanche Protection Service Zelenica - Tržič
In 2015, Tržič also started with the new "Avalanche Protection Service in the Zelenica area", financed by the Municipality of Tržič. The operation and main tasks of the service are to inform the public in the area of safety and avalanche danger in the Zelenica area.
Information will be available via the Facebook social network, the website www.zelenica.info and other public information channels.
Notifications will be made on the basis of data and forecasts of the Environment Agency of the Republic of Slovenia (ARSO), the Avalanche Service of Carinthia (LWD Kärnten), the observation network of the project Natural Disasters Without Borders (NH-WF) and regular monitoring of the situation in the area.
With this, we would like to improve the information and consequently the safety of visitors to Zelenica.
